Understanding COffee Nutrition Facts

We’ve all heard the same thing over the years. People say that coffee contains caffeine and too much of it can make you jittery and on edge. Well some people might get the jitters with caffeine, but research has shown that there are many health benefits of coffee. There is a lot of data out today regarding coffee nutrition facts.

Ok, then you ask how exactly is coffee good for body and mind? Here are some of the health benefits of coffee.  


Protection against Type 2 Diabetes

Based on a study done by the Harvard School of Public Health, coffee consumption boosts the level of plasma in the hormone binding globulin, SHBG. SHBG regulates the hormones estrogen and testosterone in the body and these hormones have been linked to the development of type 2 diabetes. In addition, another Harvard study followed coffee drinkers over a period of years. Data showed that people who increased their coffee consumption by 1.70 more cups per day (over a 4-year period) had an 11% lower risk of getting type 2 diabetes as compared to those who did not alter their regular coffee habits.

Coffee & Cancer  

Researchers in Europe have concluded that drinking coffee can reduce the risk of developing liver cancer by 40%. In fact, the study also stated that for those who consumed 3 or more cups per day, the risk reduction could be as high as 50%.  

Parkinson’s Disease 

A study conducted by a group of U.S. scientists looked at the relationship between coffee and Parkinson’s disease. The conclusion of the study was that an increased intake of both coffee and caffeine greatly lowered the emergence of the illness.  

Liver Disease 

There have been links associated with coffee intake and a 20% reduction in the development of cirrhosis of the liver for people who consumed excessive amounts of alcohol. Research found in the 2014 medical journal Hepatology that those suffering from cirrhosis who drank at least 2 cups of coffee per day could reduce the risk of dying from the liver disease by 66%.  

Brain Function

The caffeine found in coffee has been found to improve brain function in adults, based on several controlled trials. Mood, memory and reaction times can be boosted with coffee intake. In addition, the levels of certain brain hormones such as dopamine have been shown to increase.  Dopamine is one of the brain’s hormones that aid in the enjoyment of pleasurable experiences.
